Excessive Underarm Sweating — How to Stop it and Start Living

Believe it or not, excessive underarm sweating is a health issue that affects about 1 percent of the entire world population. The problem often starts during or after puberty. Let’s face it, being constantly wet and sweaty under the arm often means facing the consequential problem of having a bad body odor.

And that can limit the way you live your life…

Background Information about Excessive Underarm Sweating

The medical term for excessive underarm sweating is axillary hyperhidrosis. While human beings have some sort of armpit sweating, some people may have it to the extreme it is almost dripping.

Patients may have to change their clothing a few times a day. Wearing clothes with bright colors may not be an option because they have to hide the problem.

This type of excessive armpit (axilary) sweating is often — but not always — accomanied by excessive hand sweating (palmar hyperhidrosis).

The cause of excessive armpit sweating is somewhat complicated to explain but basically it is due to over-stimulation of the symphatetic nervous system. Food, stress condition and emotional stimuli may contribute to the problem.

Treatments for Axilary Hyperhidrosis

1. Antiperspirant
Antiperspirants can be effective in milder cases of hyperhidrosis. They work by targeting the sweat glands and reduce the production of sweat significantly. There are many antiperspirant products, including deodorants and medication.

2. Deodorants
Combinations of antiperspirant and deodorant is available and they are easy to use and cause very little or no discomfort. However, there are deodorants that are NOT antiperspirant. Some people have good experience with them and it is especially effectively for milder case of excessive underarm sweating.

3. Medical therapy
Medical therapy may range from dietary restriction, Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) injection, to iontophoresis (low voltage current is applied to the skin several times a week) and radiation.

4. Surgical therapy
In this kind of therapy, the underarm sweat glands can be cut so their production doesn’t exceed the normal limits. This procedure can be complicated and costly though. Liposuction has also been investigated to minimize surgical excision.

Natural Axillary Hiperhidrosis Treatment Tips

If medical and surgical therapy are not feasible, or you want to pursue natural treatment first, here are a few tips to help you.

1. Avoid pungent foods
Onions, garlic, fish and spicy meals may add to body odor and make it noticeable.

2. Body hygiene
Shave your armpits or at least reduce the amount of hairs in the armpit area. Hairs may hold the sweat longer and that gives the bacteria a fertile place to grow.

3. Baking soda
Apply it to dry armpit. Wash thoroughly before you apply it. In some cases, baking soda causes less irritation and are more effective than deodorants.

4. Malt vinegar
This is another old-fashioned remedy that may be worth a try. It is recommended that you apply this to your armpits at night. Malt vinegar can be used in combinations with deodorant or antiperspirant.

Just note that one treatment method can be deemed the best to one individual, but entirely ineffective for others.
